Fall 2008

Dear First Grade Parents,

I am very much looking forward to spending a rewarding year with your child, and to that end I would like to outline some routine class procedures.

Absent Notes: Absent notes are required and should be sent in when your child returns to school. They are needed to ensure the correctness for your child's attendance record.

Lunch: The children will have a snack in the classroom about 10:30 a.m. each day. They eat lunch in the cafeteria from 12:00 - 12:25 p.m. and then go outside to the playground from 12:25 - 12:45 p.m. Therefore, please prepare a nourishing snack and lunch for your child everyday, including one o'clock dismissal days. Try to avoid candy, chips and other “junk” food.

Birthdays: If you wish to send in cupcakes on your child's birthday, please notify me a few days in advance. Usually, we will celebrate at snack time. There are 18 children in our class. Please do not send birthday party invitations to school unless you are inviting all the boys or all the girls or the entire class.

Clothing: Please label all clothing including ties, pants, gym clothes, coats, hats, etc. It is important that your child be able to dress himself and tie his shoes and sneakers on his own. Children should wear their gym clothes to school on gym days.

Library: We will go to the library once a week. Each child may borrow only one book at a time, and must return it within one week. It may be returned any school day. Until a borrowed book has been returned to the library, a child will not be permitted to take out another one.

Homework: Homework will be assigned and sent home often. Please sign it and remind your child to bring it back to school. Please review all test papers.

Books: Please cover all textbooks and workbooks. It is best to reinforce the covers with cardboard inserts. This will prevent missing pages by May or June.

Supplies: Pencils, glue sticks, scissors and crayons are important tools in first grade. Please check your child's supplies often and replenish them when necessary.

Dismissal: A child may not leave with the “walkers” unless written permission is sent to school by the parent. If a child invites a classmate to come home with him, a note from the parent of the guest child is required in order for the guest child to be permitted to board the host child's bus. Please ascertain in advance your bus company's particular policies regarding guest riders. For instance, only Syosset residents may ride Syosset school buses. Remember, both guest and host child should bring notes to school.

Special Classes: Monday - Gym
Tuesday - Health,Computer and Library
Wednesday - Gym; Music
Thursday - Art
Friday - Music

I hope this information will prove useful. Good communication between teacher and parent is an important part of a child's educational development. Please do not hesitate to write or call me. I am here to help your child whenever possible.

Sincerely,

Barbara Kiley
